Released in the United States on December 20, 1996 by Dimension Films, Scream was a box office success grossing over $173,000,000 internationally and single handedly revitalizing the slasher film genre in the late 1990′s. Following on from the films success the first of two sequels was released during 1997 and the conclusion to the trilogy in 2000.
Filmed mostly in Santa Rosa, California and directed by Wes Craven from a screenplay by Kevin Williamson the film tells the story of the quiet, peaceful fictional town Woodsboro being terrorized by a black robed masked psychopathic serial killer who torments his victims with phone calls and horror film references.
The mysterious killer who wears a ghost face mask stalks his main victim Sidney Prescott played by Neve Campbell, a teenage girl whose mother Maureen was brutally murdered a year earlier. The film plays out as a “whodunit” mystery with many of the town’s folk and her friends being suspects and victims alike.
Scream has won several movie awards including, Saturn Awards for “Best Actress”, “Best Writer” and “Best Horror Film” as well as the “Best Movie” at the MTV Movie Awards 1997.
The Scream series originally was intended to be a trilogy but after ten years since Scream 3 was released, filming began during June 2010 for the next installment which is intended to be the first of a new trilogy. With Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson joining forces again cast members David Arquette, Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox are the returning members from the previous Scream trilogy of films.
